OUR
LADY OF LITTLE COMPTON
This window is
centered on an Icon of our Lady. It is modified in color and symbolic
composition to remember Queen Awashonks, the last leader of the Sakonnet Indian
tribe in Little Compton, Rhode Island, who refused to join the neighboring
tribes in the King Phillip War against the colonists and made peace with the
settlers.
In this icon Jesus is depicted as a small man looking to his
mother with love, teaching us to look - to pray to her with love and devotion
that He gave to us as our mother in the order of grace. Our mother looks at us
with tenderness and love ready to aid us in all our needs and to form us in her
sonŐs likeness. At the top of the window is a symbol of the Holy Spirit
who works through Mary to bestow His gifts and fruits. Around the icon are
seven fires like stars symbolizing the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. The
twenty light blue beads symbolize the holy rosary an ancient contemplative
prayer focused on the life of Jesus and Mary his mother while on earth and
their glory now in heaven. The circles on both sides of the icon each contain
two stars - the six-pointed star of the Old Testament and the eight-pointed
star of the New Testament being the one word of GodŐs love for us in His
beloved Son. The right bottom shield contains the official shield of the town
of Little Compton. R. I. The left bottom circle contains the Immaculate Heart
of Mary pierced with a sword as Simeon prophesied would take place at the
crucifixion. On the central cross is the Eucharist signifying the ongoing
sacrificial love of Christ on the cross and in the holy sacrifice of the mass.
The icon and all the details are on a deep blue background that signify looking
at Christ through the eyes of Mary.
