The Nativity
Description of artistic print
NATIVITY
The central image in this Catholic fine art print is the birth of Jesus in a cave in Bethlehem. I have visited Bethlehem where Jesus was born and several shepherds’ caves in the Bethlehem hills. This image captures the atmosphere of these caves especially in the details of color and light. The white light emanating from the Christ Child transcends the natural light without overpowering the light provided by the work of human hands and reflects the new intimacy and harmony of our relationship with God that was made possible by God becoming man in the person Jesus Christ. All this was made possible by the work of the Holy Spirit who is made visible in the form of a fiery dove above the central image. Surrounding God the Holy Spirit are seven winged shapes in the outer frame that represent the seven spirits that surround the throne of God in the Book of Revelation. In the outer frame of the window are twenty small light blue circles that represent the twenty mysteries of the rosary. The nativity of our Lord is the third joyful mystery. Below the central image is an image of the earth over which are the words from the prologue of St. John’s Gospel verse fourteen; “And the Word became flesh. By assuming a human nature and dying for our sins, Jesus the second person of the Holy Trinity enabled us to become sons and daughters of God. The two stars in the upper left and right corners represent St. Michael the archangel as the leader of the angels who defend and protect the old and new people of God.
